Lead the Chi–Real Life Case / Mener le chi dans la vraie vie

Break-In at MY Home!
Well, not exactly…. At half-past midnight my wife wakes me up screaming to call 9-1-1. Half-asleep, completely startled and my body not responding well, I jump out of bed and slid downstairs falling on my butt along the way – OUCH!

She was holding the door closed while someone was pounding hard on the door as if to break in. He would then waddle, wobble and gyrate around to the garage and then knock hard on the door window – I was concerned that it would shatter in our faces. The phone buttons fumbled and dialling 9-1-1 got stuck in the phone’s directory menu!!!!
Cambriolage chez-moi!

I finally get 9-1-1 and the guy continues to bash-in with his shoulder. Still half-asleep and with NO control over my own reactions, I started to shout at the top of my lungs (I can only imagine what the 9-1-1 operator thought of this!), hoping scare him away, even if that means the police loosing his tracks….. it did not work: that had to prove he was inebriated out of the control of his own reason.

Finally, the police show-up and confirm he was drunk out of his wits and mistook this address for his home down the block. In the end, no harm done, completely laughable!

Training Is Not Real Life!
What struck me about the experience is my own reaction: while training for Tai-Chi or meditating, I would NEVER, yell out loud to scare away an attacker…. thing is, meditation and training are all “make-believe” they have absolutely nothing to do with impulsive reactions, especially when half-conscious from being startled out of a deep sleep!

To me, this experience testifies to work I need to do on self-control of my emotions and keening self-awareness in all states of wakefulness or partial sleep. The latter is meditation work, but control over emotions cannot be sure without actually being exposed to situations. I suppose participating in self-defense classes or other fighting clubs might be useful if they push the limits of feeling safe or helpless.
Fighters teaching fighters completely miss this!

Happen to Pacifists Too!
Don’t anyone be fooled in thinking that a kind and generous nature will prevent this kind of break-in from ever happening. In fact, we were lucky – this could have been a burglary with malicious and violent intentions: there are plenty of stories in the news to make that a real possibility. Anyone, regardless of social ethics, can find themselves in a situation of violence without warning, even if you’re injured or old or weak… what do you do?

The whole purpose of Tai-Chi as a martial art is to assume your attacker is younger, stronger, faster and a more skilled fighter than yourself. The very gentle forms are meant to build structural stability and fluidity of movement while during hand-to-hand combat so that the opponent can never get you off balance. Of course, this assumes you or I have the presence and stability of mind to lead the Chi (in the form of emotions) rather than the Chi leading the mind in the form of panic!

I have to believe that anything that builds self-confidence is good and useful … so long as it does not lead to blind arrogance… In the meantime…. OUCH MY BUTT HURTS! Embarrassé
Training yourself to go to jail!

Entretemps…. AILLE J’AI MAL AU DERRIÈRE! Embarrassé
